The Kapheim Lab at Utah State University is recruiting a Ph.D. student for Fall 2018 to study maternal effects in solitary bees. This student will be encouraged to develop her/his own research program with the overarching goal of understanding the molecular mechanisms and phenotypic consequences of transgenerational effects. Students working on the project will receive training in field biology, physiology, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in outreach and extension activities.

Research in the Kapheim lab addresses the evolutionary processes responsible for the diversity and plasticity of complex traits. We seek to understand the developmental and sociogenomic mechanisms underlying behavior to better understand how it evolves. Our research is integrated across sub-disciplines of biology, including evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, comparative genomics and transcriptomics, neurobiology, physiology, and metagenomics. The USU Department of Biology is home to a superb faculty with a diverse set of research interests. USU is located in northern Utah’s Cache Valley. Situated between two mountain ranges and next to beautiful Logan Canyon, there are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork, as well as outdoor recreation, in and around Logan.

This position is supported by a combination of research assistantships and teaching assistantships for a minimum of five years. This includes a tuition and partial fee waiver, health insurance, and stipend.
