Job Title:  Compliance Specialist I

Job Description 

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) is seeking a Compliance Specialist I to work on entomology and molecular biology related activities. UDAF enforces rules and coordinates programs related to agriculturally-important insects. The Plant Industry Division is seeking a qualified candidate that will manage molecular testing operations, conduct apiary inspections, participate in surveillance and detection programs for invasive and rangeland pests and other tasks as assigned.

Principal Duties

  • Manage quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) testing operations related to honey bee diseases.
  • Inspect beehives for pathogens and pests inimical to honey bees.
  • Conducting temperament tests for aggressive honey bee stock.
  • Presentations to beekeepers, pesticide applicators and other stakeholders on honey bee health-related topics.
  • Regulatory actions when serious violations of the Utah Bee Inspection Act are found.
  • Assisting the Pesticide Compliance Program as needed with investigations related to honey bee pesticide-poisonings.
  • Participate as needed with invasive and rangeland pest monitoring, detection, suppression and eradication programs.
  • Writing ISO-compliant standard operating procedures for lab activities.
  • Building positive relations with stakeholders.
  • Other entomology-related duties as assigned.

 Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in Entomology, Biology, other related-science field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in operating qPCR testing systems and performing tasks such as DNA extraction and DNA amplification.
  • Ability to maintain qPCR testing systems, order testing supplies, inventory and catalogue previously collected samples and coordinate with other molecular labs as necessary.
  • Experience working with honey bees.
  • Friendly and respectful with the public.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Interest in insects.

Supplemental Information

  • Significant portions of this job involve being outdoors. Qualified candidates must be able to work in inclement weather, including but not limited to: rain, snow, hail and extremes in cold and heat.
  • This position involves extensive driving; applicant must be willing to travel long distances within the state and stay overnight near work locations.
  • Field activities involve working with live, stinging insects.
  • Job occasionally requires physical excursion, including lifting (or assisting in lifting) objects heavier than 50 lbs.
  • This position receives high volume of phone calls and emails.
  • Work must sometimes be performed at irregular hours and on weekends.
