Great Insect Fair will put bugs on center stage at Penn State

Everything insect, from edible bug-based treats to bug-centered games and crafts to an insect zoo of strange creatures, will pack Snider Agricultural Arena at Penn State's University Park for the Department of Entomology's annual Great Insect Fair from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, September 22.

Other activities this year will include backyard bees, honey tasting, bumblebees, butterfly tents, insect construction, vector-borne disease, insects from the inside, face painting and zombie ant fungus.

The insect edibles at the Insect Deli vary each year. Last year the menu included chocolate chirp cookies, sweet and salty squirmies, and Cajun crunchies.

In addition, vendors will sell a range of insect arts, crafts, books, t-shirts and mounted insect specimens.

The Great Insect Fair is all about hands-on experiences, including the handling of some large and exotic insects and arachnids, such as a huge cave spider, which may be recognizable to many from the classroom Cruciatus curse scene in the movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

Theme of the fair this year will be "Insects in Pop Culture."
