2012 Penn State Queen Rearing Workshop

Posted: February 24, 2012

We will be hosting our second annual Queen Rearing Workshop at Penn State from June 2-3, 2012.

This workshop will involve a blend of
lectures and hands-on exercises in the field. Lectures will cover multiple topics in honey bee queen biology, mating behavior, rearing, management, and the basics of selective honey bee breeding programs. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice multiple methods for queen rearing (including grafting), as well as techniques for assessing parasite (Varroa and Nosema) loads in colonies and evaluating hygienic behavior. Several types of honey bee stocks (including those selected for hygienic behavior) will be available for grafting, and local participants can take the queens resulting from their grafting exercises back to their apiaries.
