Christmas Tree Scouting Report - August 11

Last week only a few eggs of Cryptomeria scale were found under the female adult covers in Lebanon County. Today many more eggs were found and a few have begun to hatch and were found out on the needles. One of the state plant inspectors from Schuylkill County reported finding eggs only.

A good place to look for eggs and crawlers is on this year’s growth. This is where some of the scale from the first generation settled and are now mature and producing the second generation of eggs that will hatch to over winter and continue the infestation next year if not controlled. Wait till eggs begin to hatch before applying a registered insecticide then continue with a second and possibly a third if there are eggs still to hatch.

This will be the last update for the 2005 year.
